Today I received in the mail a new book entitled "The Ansel Adams Guide
Basics Techniques of Photography Book 2" John P. Schaefer Copyright 1998
Little , Brown and Company. This book is essentially a handbook of alternative
process photography. Some of the features are: a nice history of alternative
process; lots of stuff about negatives and developers; a good discussion of
various ways to make large negatives; a section on print frames, light sources,
papers and chemicals;chapters on cyanotype, alternative silver (like salt
prints, VDB, etc), platinum/pladium and gum; a good section on color which
includes hand coloring and image transfer and two chapters on electronic and
digital imaging. Price $38.95 (USA) $50.00 (Canada).
Of course, I could not read the whole thing in detail today, but what I did
read appears to be well and clearly written. The instructions for making
various types of alt process prints are clear, accurate and easy-to-follow.
Many helpful hints are included.
Note to Judy: There is a nice discussion of the use of 21 step wedges.
The book contains 180 black and white and 172 color illustrations. For
us science types it has 37 graphs. Many of the color illustrations are
alt-process prints both old and new. Some very nice 3-color gum prints .
I saw a modern Fresson print. Lots of platinum prints.
I predict this book will become a "classic." Check it out. If I were
teaching a course in alternatice process printing, this would be my choice
for a textbook.
