And that says it all. Resolution is probably the least important thing
(once you pass a certain minimum level) in any reproduction process.
Portrayal of tone is the key, and that takes enormously more data than
merely defining a sharp edge. Dye-sub prints manage fairly convincing
tone by bleeding the edges of the dots together--and they also look
fairly sharp even though the print resolution is around 200 dpi. Those
very coarse pixels have a lot of tonal information in them, which
results in a better result than a much smaller (sharper) pixel with less
tonal information to convey.
