When I got out of the Marine Corps in 1964 I got a job at Producers Film
Lab in Hollywood. I worked as a custom printer and my First Day initiation
was to have one of those humongous 150 watt light bulb sized flash bulbs
put into my Omega D2. I raised the head and then turned on the enlarger
light to place the negative. Ka-pow! Yikes! These were big monsters filled
with magnesium foil and they go off with a bang.
I watched several of the old timers 2 or 3 times a day take a spoonful of
bromide. There was also this guy who came in each morning and mumbled
quietly, took a few bucks from each of the guys (except me) and disappear.
My inquiries were turned aside. I don't think I ever caught on at the time,
but I now know he was the local bookie.
I got fired in about 3 months because I didn't take my work too seriously.
It was boring as well. This was just about the time the censorship laws
were loosening and we did lots of printing for under the counter porno mags
-- both gay and straight. I also did a lot of catalog pictures for the Air
Force of airplane parts. Not my idea of an exiting career in photography.
