Larry,

For the post-development staining step I find it better to use a sodium
metaborate bath (1/2 tsp per liter of water) instead of the used
developer. This gives a very smooth and very proportional stain action
with almost no stain in the film-edge. I suspect partially oxidized
developer is more apt to give some undesireable overall stain.---Carl
