Folks, I have received quite a few petitions of various kinds about NEA,
NPR, etc. For complex reasons (which may be wrong), I haven't signed them.
But for what it's worth here, I mention that I make a HEFTY contribution
of DOLLARS to WNYC (the Greenwich Village Branch of Public Radio) and
similar operations at least once a year, often more frequently, and I
assume that the census of such support would have some weight with the
powers that be.

I do NOT equate private support with public support. I do believe such
groups should have public support, which would come probably to a fraction
per citizen of what an "independent prosecutor" now spends to stamp out
civil liberties and the first amendment. But I do have trouble with the
means and mode of such "petitions."

I appreciate the wish to alert colleagues and enlist them in the
struggle, which continues on so MANY fronts across this "great nation of
ours", but I fear any proper analysis of the issues is more than this list
can take... I bet, though, there are some pretty good Web sites in the
matter (if you have a server that likes web sites).

Meanwhile, let us all support the sane politician of our choice, write
him or her, and pay attention to print media where these matters are often
usefully discussed.
