color gums

I've had incredible results doing color gums, but my excursion into
in-camera-separation-world has been less than stellar. I'm using 8x10
Plus-X, and am finding the final image slightly flat in contrast and
rendering muted colors. All of the seps I had used from dye transfer are
incredibly contrasty and bursting with color. They are Super XX. Should
I switch film, or just expose and develop the Plus-X for more contrast?

Can anyone recommend a text about color theory specifically involving the
making of separations?
