Mac,

Davidson's early work was on Tri-X in NY, Ilford HPxx for early England
and Wales series. Probably the closest "look" to 50's-60's Tri-X
available today is TMax P3200. This will burden you with much higher
film speed which in turn will make it hard to get some of the effects
where subject motion--a blurred hand gesture--combines with selective
focus. But the TSpeed grain is very remeniscent of old Tri-X. He also
enlarged with a condenser which contributes to the contrast/grain
appearance, and to get some of the general optical look you could shoot
with a vintage Leica. Bruce used M2's and shot most of the time with a
35mm Summicron. Expose the P3200 at about ei 1000 and develop in HC110B
for a start.

But the most important part is to study Davidson's brilliant early work
and learn about his vision and his interaction with his subjects. The
printing is entirely secondary.
