Well, this is certainly in interesting thread. I know not much about things digital
but I know a little so I'll add a very simple (hopefully not simple-minded) thought.
Without being an expert, I suppose I would convert RGB to CMYK before making the
negative because that's what you do when you print on paper. You do it when printing
on paper (I thought) because some of the RGB colors aren't printable in CMYK
Photoshop is telling you that some of the colors in your RGB file won't convert to
CMYK. So, since you convert to CMYK before printing on paper, and not knowing any
better, I would have done the same when making a negative on the theory that you're
still printing, you're just printing on a different type of material. I'm not saying
this is "right." I'm just answering someone's question as to why one might think
that you should convert from RGB to CMYK.
