Dear Michael,
CT stands for contone - continuous tone. This would mean that the ouput
is not rasterized, which is not true of course. These systems behave
different however than Postsript systems in that they can produce more
than 256 levels of gray. Postsript output is limited by the language
itself which will only do 8-bit output (2^8=256).
The disadvantage of a CT system is that it is a closed architecture; in
Postscript it doesn't matter whose machines you combine with whose
software etc... as long as they all speak Postscript they'll understand
each other (theoretically speaking). In CT, most manufacturers have some
sort of propriatary format (as with Unix, there's no real standard.
