With all the talk about having a lot of equipment or not I think that it
really depends on the individual, their shooting style, and their sense of
wonder and adventure. A couple of Leicas were always good for
Cartier-Bresson or Salgado, but I find that I like to have many types of
cameras because when I pick up each one I see the world a different way
depending on the particular camera. I confess, I am one of those people who
has several cameras from 35mm up to 8x10. When I become bored or stuck
creatively in one format I find that I can unleash my vision by switching to
another format or from B&W to color. I may not stray from my favored
format, which at the moment is medium (regular medium not Patrick Alt's 8x10
medium), but I like to have the ability to have the right tool for the job.
Everyone tends to have a main shooting style that fits well usually with one
format, occasionally two. But the world is a complex place, and I am a
complex person, so many cameras work for me. I like to experiment and get
easily bored so this type of equipment load fits me. Many times I wish that
I could be as simply equipped as Salgado, but then I wouldn't be me. I
don't know who I would be.
