The intention is to increase the subject brightness range that the film is
able to record.
If you pre-expose any film to a grey card, using an exposure (someone said)
of 1/3rd the normal camera exposure for the subject, the effect is to lower
the density (on tran film) of the shadow areas, thus allowing you to
slightly cut back on exposure to the highlights and retain detail here.
It's the same as flashing a piece of photo. paper in the darkroom to lower
contrast.
