I don't know about a $1000 laser printer that'll do large (over 8x10)
printing. If it does make clear and fully colored prints of consistent
quality it is a bargain.
For big/large printing, the Epson is a primary choice. I have just purchased
an Epson 300 due to its 3 separate cartridges. Thought the inkjet dot size is
not the newer smallest of the Epson print heads, it ought to be excellent.
The Alps MD=1000, which I own and use, does a very good job if you maintain
about 50% or less humidity (they advise not using over 60%) , hence, if
you're having problems, it is smart to even 'dry' your paper.
You also must use "good" paper which is either that sold by Alps or a good
substitute you might discover.
The MD - 5000 as noted by Sil Horowitz, is theoretically supposed to create
an image in b/w that is difficult to distinguish from an original from a few
feet away. I have seen samples only which corroborate this fact.
It is my plan to visit the Alps factory within the next couple of weeks to
run a test and have my printer checked out.
The Epson ought to arrive @ my desktop within this next week.
But, again, if large is your goal, then Epson is your tool.
And, by the by, my Epson, with a 2-year warrantee, was $800
