     'This three-hour series traces the role of photography in the personal
     lives and public history of 20th-century America and the profound
     effect photographs have had on Americans -- influencing what they buy,
     how they dress, how they get the news -- and in matters of life and
     death, medicine, science and war. Of photography's many roles in
     society, the series focuses on four: as recorder of public events; as
     family historian; as vehicle of artistic expression; and as a tool for
     influencing public opinion.'

     The program airs on PBS stations in the USA on 10/13/99 at 8:00 p.m.
