I believe the article (or now articles) are collected and printed in Ctein's
book "Post Exposure" because I was just reading it a few days ago and one
chapter sounded exactly like what you described, so it might be the same
article.
I think it is a pretty good book that deals with the technical side of
photography in a non-technical presentation.
