Abstract:
In the carbon workshop, the student can expect to learn:
1. What materials, including light sources, are necessary for carbon
printing, and how to use them.
2. To make carbon tissue and other necessary materials that are not
available commercially.
3. Some elements of basic sensitometry which will allow one to
choose and make negatives suitable for the carbon process, including
various kinds of enlarged negatives.
4. How to sensitize carbon tissue and prepare it for printing.
5. To expose the tissue and transfer it to a suitable base.
6. To develop the carbon image.
7. How to clear the print and carry out final finishing, including
touch-up work.
Students are encouraged to bring negatives suitable for carbon printing
in 4x5" to 8x10" size to the workshop. Negative which print well on a
grade #0 or #1 silver paper should print well in carbon
Note: Facilities will be available to make enlarged negatives from
smaller originals
Biography: Sandy King is the author of numerous published studies on
photographic aesthetics and techniques, including The Photographic
Impressionists of Spain: A History of the Aesthetics and Techniques of
Pictorial Photography.
Sandy is a landscape photographer who has worked almost exclusively in
carbon and carbro, both in monochrome and in color since the early
1980's. He has conducted numerous workshops and demonstrations on how
to make prints with this beautiful and fascinating medium.
