There are two main differences: 1. Epson claims the
longevity for OEM inks and papers is 20 years (vs about 2
minutes for their 1200 inks/papers) and 2. Epson put a chip
on the ink cartridges that not only allows them to better
manage ink usage (things like being able to switch out carts
mid-print, continue printing as if no change had been made),
but also allows them to prohibit the use of third party inks.
