Thanks, Sandy.  At least this is beginning to make some sense.  If I
interpret your words correctly, using the same negative for both kallitype
and Van Dyke (no "correctness-checker" on my end!) would result in a flatter
Van Dyke print, which is entirely the case in my situation.

When I get a chance, I'll check against a step wedge, which, come to think
of it, is something I should have done a long time ago.
