Jeff and Sandy,

I place the bare ground wire about 3 inches from the end of the tube toward the center of the exposure housing. The wire does not come in contact with the metal end cap or the insertion pins, instead it touches only the glass tubes. Sorry this wasn't clear. Using a bare wire can have the same hazards as any metal conductor would, such as metal reflector.

This is why I noted the importance of correct AC wiring polarity. Also I do assume that the circuit is fused properly. If you are really concerned about shorting the ground wire the use of a ground fault breaker or outlet will add additional safety and may be a reasonable precaution since the exposure unit is not a UL certified device.
