When I wanted to use paper with a thick gelatin coating on inkjet a few
years back, I just made up some gelatin and coated it. You can
alter the thickness by using higher or lower gelatin concentrations as
well as by multiple coating.
Photographic papers do of course have a good thick gelatin coating, but
those I tried didn't work, probably because the surface is hardened.
With the inks I was using, it did have the effect of stopping pigment
spread. Using a low power microscope you can clearly see the small beads
of pigment in the gelatine, while on paper without the coating it is
clearly spreading more into the fibres. However, although the prints were
sharper, the highlights were clearly more dotty.
I don't know how pigment inks would work with this. I'd suggest you look
instead at papers with coatings designed for inkjets, such as the
Hahnemuhle range, which give excellent results for me for final prints.
