I think Dick Sullivan has a reprint of instructions from Mortensen's
school. It goes a little further than he did in his book.
The paper surface is roughed with pummice, then coated with a sort of
crayon sauce, which is then rubbed away from the highlights. This is very
oversimplified.
I suppose its schlocky or not depending on who does it.
Mortensen is the subject of considerable controversey, as I am sure most
on this list knows. Some of his stuff makes me fall down laughing but its
all done with a certain panache which rescues it from quite being trash.
