Tom,
     Did you try this and did it work? Is "petrol" gasoline, I assume?

"To render prints translucent apply a solution of: Tricresyl phosphate 50
parts Petrol 49 parts Acetone 1 part to the back of a print with a
broad camel brush or cotton wool and after 3 or 4 hours the print becomes
most translucent! What is 'Tricresyl phosphate' please?" Tom
