Hi Robert.

It depends on how much you'd like to spend and on the negative size. You
can get a working system for nothing, and a deluxe model for a few
thousand dollars.

Since you mentioned you wanted to 'try,' I assume you'd like to have a
free register system to start with.

There are many such systems. Here' one of them:

Assuming you're trying it out in a negative format of about 8x10", all
you need is a plastic ruler 10 or 12" long, three needles, preferrably
steel, and a piece of styrofoam (approximately 5x12"), and a clear foil
a bit smaller than your paper but larger than your negative(inkjet foils
work well).

Cut or break the needles in half. Keep only the halves with the sharp
tip.

Heat up a needle at a time and press it into the ruler. Your ruler
should now look like a very simple 'fakir's bed.' The part of the
needles that sticks out of the ruler should not be too long, not more
than .25".

  --------------------------------------------------
  | x x x |
  --------------------------------------------------

And there you have a simple and very effective registration system.

Put the styrofoam on the table, put the paper on top of the styrofoam,
then the foil, and then press the ruler through that sandwich.

 =================== ruler
  | | |

 ------------------- foil
 mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm paper
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx styrofoam

Then pull out the ruler from the sandwich and put it on the table,
needles up.

Coat the paper.

When the emulsion has dried, put the paper back onto the pins in the
ruler, then the foil, and mount your negative (between the paper and the
foil) onto the foil with tape.

Then tape the foil to the paper, pull the paper/foil/negative combo off
the needles, expose, develop, dry.

Then repeat the process. You don't have to mount the negative anymore.
It stays taped to the clear foil.

Sounds all very complicated, but in practice it is super simple. Much
better than visual registration.
