I can't quite picture how yours looks, but it sounds a bit different
from the one I made. Mine also came from a book, I don't remember whose
unfortunately. It works very much like a slide rule (not that many
people know what a slide rule is anymore). It has an outside holder made
by folding and glueing a piece of cardstock in the shape of a hollow
ruler. Before folding, you cut out a slit almost the length of the
thing, about 1/4" wide, in what would be the front surface of the
holder. Then you cut another length of cardstock that fits inside the
holder and slides back and forth. The exposure times are written on the
sliding piece, the apertures on the holder next to the slit. The whole
thing is only about 8 or 9 inches long and fits nicely in the front
zipper pocket of my gear bag.
