The expression "beating a dead horse" comes from Fyodor Dostoevsky's book
Crime and Punishment. While it has multiple layers of meaning the simplest
is you can beat or whip a horse to encourage to pull a load (not endorsing).
Once the horse is dead,further whipping accomplishes nothing. BTW this "what
is art" has been a great thread. Let's keep thinking. Thom
