For the past several weeks I've been printing VDBs as outlined by Wynn White in his article on The Unblinking Eye web site.

Wynn's method of double coating works very well except I do have a bit of a dingy stain left in the unexposed areas. I haven't tried single coating, but I don't think it would matter about the stain.

To clear the print I use two water baths with 1% citric acid for 4 minutes each. The staining only occurs with heavier papers such as Arches Platine or Fabriano Satinata. Cranes NW Wove 90 clears well. I've yet to try others.

Sandy King's suggestion about toning before fixing to reduce bleaching is an excellent one BTW. I've also reduced fixer concentraion to 1.5%. Kodak selenium toner is dilluted to 2ml per liter, half the suggested rate by White's article. Regardless of fixer concentration or toners used the paper base stain is still left. I've toned with palladium and gold too.

Although I don't have a reflection densitometer the stain density seems to be about .10 to .20 above paper base white.

Does anyone have any suggestions about how to achieve clearing with these papers?

Thanks,

Don Bryant
