It really is very easy but the economics are dependant on how cheaply you
can obtain the oxalic acid.
Here in the U.K I can obtain oxalic acid at £6.00 for 5Kg from a specialist
supplier to cabinet makers. The oxalic acid is used industrially to remove
rust from iron/steel goods.
I make a 20% solution of oxalic acid with COLD water in a plastic bucket
then add potassium hydroxide or potassium carbonate until it registers pH
neutral (7) If you take it too far then just add more of the alkali to
return it to pH 7. There is a graet deal of carbon dioxide gas and heat
released during the reaction so just add a little of the alkali at a time
and DO ensure that there is adequate space above the solution in order that
the liquid does not 'boil' over.
