Dear Jeff,

As Bob, I use carborundum. Carborundum is a fine powder of tungsten carbide small particles.
Is there a university with a geology department nearby ? Just go and ask them. They often use carborundum polishing samples for microscopy.
The way it works is exactly what Bob explains. The result is very very fine and nice, with no corrosive chemicals.
