I've had good luck using an internet escrow service for a large purchase.
You send the service the money. The seller ships the item. If the item is satisfactory, you instruct the service to release the money to the seller. There was a small fee which the seller paid.
Sorry, I can't remember the name of the escrow company, but one should be easy to locate.
