Hi all.
Yesterday I went to Florence to visit the exhibition "Fratelli Alinari, fotografi in Firenze. 150 anni che illustrarono il mondo. 1852/2002".
I suggest to those are going to come in Italy before June 2nd to plan also an half day to spent visiting this exhibition (see also http://www.alinari.com/ ), held in Palazzo Strozzi with more than 500 prints filling 16 rooms, divided by themes (e.g. the tourism photography in the middle 1800, the realism, the architectural phot., the art documentation, ...).
The pictures from 1852 up to the end of 1800 are chiefly albumen prints, with some salt prints; almost all are in good conditions, though it is not ever possible to know if they were gold toned or not. In the last rooms there are also a couple of carbon prints.
There are also some remarkable examples of collages, like that of the Piazza della Signoria assembled from 4 prints forming a 68.9x105.5 cm image (1863), or that of the "Adorazione dei Magi" of Gentile da Fabriano, reproduced 1:1 and then hand coloured (end of 1800).
An entire room is devoted to the comparison of landscape pictures, in addition to the Alinari's ones, from Ponti, Naya, Bresolin, Caneva, Anderson, Clifford, Negre and Macpherson (I am not sure to have mentioned all).
The exhibition shows also some original tripods, lenses and cameras for negatives up to 40 cm, and, among other ones, an original silver gelatine negative on glass sizing 115x88 cm (1889).
