The Douglas Daguerreotype (run that past your spell-checker a few more 
times!) seems to be one of those things that the AIC finds ways to keep on 
display.   I think that I first saw it in an exhibition of recent 
acquisitions and then in an exhibition of images of African-Americans...it 
sort of qualifies as a significant piece in so many ways that it can be part 
of many different themes for shows.
As far as I know, the AIC's photo department is very obliging about letting 
those with legitimate interest have access to the collection.   I believe 
that you can make an appointment to view specific things in the study center 
that adjoins the galleries and that they will have them ready for you when 
you arrive for the appointment.   Granted, I have never actually done this 
myself but my wife did work at the AIC for a while and I always understood 
that that was the mission of the department of photo.

photos, there's nothing like seeing the real thing.
