Some bulbs actually have a silver reflective coating on the rounded end
of the bulb, allowing light from the bulb to reflect back up towards
the bulb base. This is particularly nice when using it in applications
where you might accidentally look straight at the bulb. The light
intensity coming from the bulb will remain relatively the same, but it
is bounced away from the viewer, and diffused. Seen these bulbs used
for dining and theatrical applications...
