Peter E. Palmquist
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Peter E. Palmquist, who wrote, edited
or contributed to more than 25 books devoted to U.S.
photographic history, died Jan. 13 after being struck by a
hit-and-run driver. He was 66.
Palmquist specialized in historic photography in the western
United States and women photographers. His most recent book,
"Pioneer Photographers of the Far West: A Biographical
Dictionary, 1840-1865," was a collaboration published last
year by Stanford University Press.
He was the founder and curator of the Women in Photography
International Archive in Arcata, an organization that
catalogs and archives the works of female photographers from
around the world. The archive was founded after he wrote the
1991 book "Shadowcatchers: A Directory of Women in
California Photography before 1901."
Palmquist also was known for a collection of more than
50,000 historic photos, including a famous black-and-white
picture of President Teddy Roosevelt visiting Yosemite Falls
in 1903.
