Continuing info re Direct Carbon.
<This "Arvel " paper was sold commercially over a period of
approx 15 years <prior to World War Two and was developed using a weak solution of
potassium <hypochlorite (household bleach) thus doing away with the messy
sawdust mixture <and the riguorous water temperature controls needed to adjust the
density of the <print.
The control of the temperature of the sawdust solution was
indeed rigorous (I have tried it, myself) and the use of a weak bleach bath, at
room temperature, must have greatly simplified the process which was obviously,
then, more user friendly and successful for many print makers since the
paper was commercially available over a period of fifteen years. Information on
and identification of prints produced by the "Arvel" system, I have found, is
extremely rare. In fact, during the past twelve years I have been tracking down
Direct Carbon, Nadeau's reference to it being in the American Annual of
Photography 1929, is the only one I have come accross.
              Anyone specifically interested.....please contact me.
Apologies for the error re. "rigorous"
