John,
This will open up lots of opinions but let me tell you what I have
found:
Someone once said black frames were "funerary" and I thought that weird
but anyway, lately (after always framing in black frames with white mats) I
decided to pay attention to the mats in museums and was shocked to find out
that there were black and white images, not toned mind you, framed in cream
mat board, and maybe it could just be it was white mat board that turned
cream but I don't think so. Watch it sometime: the frames and mats in
museums are all over the place. And they don't match cold tone to cold
tone.
I always match the tone of my mat board to the image; since I always
warmtone, I have found this mat board that is almost white but it has a hint
of warm yellow/pink to it, and then this frame that is called "antique
pewter", it is a warm brushed silver metal with a hint of yellow/pink also.
They are beautiful together. I get both at a place called Budget Framers, I
think a chain, n'est-ce pas?
For the images that I want to frame more expensively, I have chosen
wooden frames, that unbleached...is it maple? stuff that i also see all over
museums.
What was interesting when I went around to grad schools was how many
flush mounted work. Of course, that may not fly in an art museum, to be
sure, as it is soooooo subject to dings. But it did get me thinking about
the mat board and what effect it has on an image.
Chris
