In the equation above, X would be the iso(or ASA), which given the example
above would be shutter speed of 100 or 125, the Y or F stop is 16 . . .

The reason Foy gets sharper (I assume color) pictures, is due to the effect
of over exposing the color negative film. If he'd made that adjustment
using slide film, they would be thin. With B&W film, the negatives would be
thick and the chances are good that you would have a greater acutance
showing in the print.

The sunny 16 rule is usually found on a little piece of paper inside the
film box with the film, or printed inside the box itself. It used to be.
