I actually have it down to 25-35 sec exposures. I (or my subject) am usually
braced up against something when I'm taking my image. I'm using an old
barrel lens with no shutter that I'm guessing is around F5.6 - F3.4 I don't
know what the exact F-stop is. Since I'm using an old speed graphic press
camera, instead of my huge and heavy Calumet 8x10, I cannot get close enough
to my subjects with my bellows. I have found a clever (clever for me at
least) way around this. Long ago I bought some filter close up lenses (I
don't really know what they are called). They are a nice size (filter size
67) and they are the type where you have three separate lenses labeled 1-3
that stack on top of each other. Long story short, I have taken the front
element off my old barrel lens, found some step up rings to fit the front of
the barrel lens (which is a size 49), and now use these filters, usually
number 1 and number 2 together, as my front element. I can get quite close
on my subjects, especially when I use all three elements, and it seems that
my exposure time is less.

Thanks Christopher for the details. So using iodine in full blue skylight
would require quite long exposures. How did you manage to make those
portaits?.
Good luck!
