Even with the Histogram available on the D1X, you can easily blow it out.
The problem sometimes is that you will not notice that there is a long narrow
horizontal strip of data in the highlights.
One thing you can check on your camera settings is any way of changing
contrast. If the camera has a contrast setting, set it to the lowest possible
value. This will help a lot—any correction needed due to the low contrast
setting can be done in Photoshop. This will eliminate some of the highlight
blowout.
I agree that with digital cameras you expose for the highlights.
