I hadn't see any perceptible-to-the-unaided-eye quality difference between
images printed 1440 and 2880dpi on my 890 (not one of the printers that
you're comparing I presume). Yes, there's a difference but only when you
inspect with the loupe (or maybe if you're a very attentive viewer - and
this doesn't mean one is better than the other; it means just they're
different) and most importantly, the the printer is 2x faster in 1440 mode.
So, after making this test I never bothered to use it in 2880 mode. BTW, I
print quadtone B&W with a 1160 (1440dpi, old type printhead) and I'm very
happy by the results.

IMHO, if you don't print small (smaller than A4) then 1440, 2880 or 5760
doesn't matter much.
