Since we are now a provincial society of self-enforced ignorance, we
assume that everyone else in our society is equally ignorant. Therefore,
if someone says something original, we have to assume that it derives
from somewhere else. If it's different enough, it's derided and
attributed to the old country, Europe. God forbid that an American
writer, and a woman yet, originate.
