I used to work in the paint manufacturing industry and wire wound bars were
used regularly to lay down a known thickness of paint film. If there is a
number stamped on the bar it should be the film thickness it will lay down
,measured in either microns or thousandths of an inch. The bar should not come to
much harm unless you leave it in the dichromate for a considerable time . If you
clean it well after each use it should be fine.
