Perhaps it's also because you've been using good film. Some of the "white box" sheet films cut from a
large roll can have a severe curl in it and no holder other than vacuum would keep it flat.

Of course with longer lenses you have greater depth of focus so a slight shift from the ground glass
plane may not be noticeable. Not so with very short focal length lenses.

I have a couple of boxes of 4x5 and 5x7 films that can't be used for anything except perhaps pinhole.
