I would be concerned about the following approach, soaking the film. There are probably soluble items in modern emulsion which would be VERY unpredictable.

  Why don't you load the film onto a reel (unexposed), soak off the anti-halation backing in water, dry the film in the dark and re-load it? Then you can use any film you like. You may get a reflected pattern from the pressure plate in your camera (usually dimpled)
