More comments on making springs for frames...
When making wood springs the power of the spring is increased by having them
taper toward the ends, thicker or wider in the center, like a long bow. Mild
steel, as can be bought from steel suppliers or good hardware stores, can be
used as is with a little bend in the center. Most of the steel that is
available through these sources is "cold finished" which means that it has
been through a final rolling without heat. The cold rolling workhardens the
steel. If the material you find is not springy enough cold hammering it will
have the same effect.
