I can't speak for Chris, but for SINGLS COLOR gum, there's absolutely no reason to preshrink anything.

Nor size. Granted, you may not be able get much of a print on copier paper, but almost anything better than that could do quite well. I would tell students to save their money and practice with some much cheaper paper for one coat gum.
