Grainy looks?

Hi all,

After looking at the work of Christina Z. Anderson at
alternativephotography.com, I took a look around at others work and there
seems to be a constant, at least for the work I look at, most of the images
have a grainy look amoung other attributes that I find interesting. Is this
a result of the process used to print the image or does it come from the
original negative? (Or both)
