The Daguerreian Society and Silver Eye Center for Photography proudly
present Daguerreian Niche: Works by Contemporary Artists on view
September 15 – October 15, 2005.  This photography exhibition features
seventeen daguerreotypists from around the world. The exhibition and
all programs take place at The Daguerreian Society in Dormont (3043
West Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15216) while Silver Eye is
undergoing extensive renovations. Go to

The Opening Reception will take place at The Daguerreian Society (3043
West Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15216) on Saturday, September 17,
4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Admission is free to the
gallery and for the reception.

The daguerreotype, the first photographic art form, popular in the
1840s and 50s, is a one-of-a kind image produced on a plate of
mirror-polished silver. The daguerreotypist must first polish his or
her own plates and then endure a cocktail of hazardous chemicals to
first sensitize, then develop the image. The Daguerreian Society and
Silver Eye Center for Photography are presenting an opportunity to see
some of the very best contemporary daguerreotypes made by this small
group of dedicated practitioners—keeping the art alive.

Programming includes gallery talks by The President of the Daguerreian
Society and Co-Curator of this exhibition, Mark Johnson, participating
daguerreotypist Michael Robinson and an Artist Statement workshop led
by writer and editor, Sherrie Flick. Click here for program
