Thanks to all of the people who have answered my question and made
suggestions both on and off list. I think I will be buying a D200 in
September when the bonus comes in.

I think that I will stay with Nikon for now because I have a number of Nikon
lenses and accessories which will help lower the overall cost though some
good comments have been made supporting the Canon. As well, I have always
had bad luck with the ergonomics of Canon cameras (having wide palms and
stubby fingers). Other than that, I would probably move to the Canon.

As for my needs, I am renting and will not be able to put in a darkroom
where I live. I do, however, have everything I need for a "lightroom":
Photoshop CS2, an Epson 1280 printer, Mark's PDN system, and Dan's book and
templates. I also have a Nikon scanner but find scanning a lot of images to
be a pain in the a@@. The digital camera will complete the set.

The digital camera will also provide a break on costs (pro processing,
driving about 100 km [about 63 miles return] to get it done, and film) while
I continue working on my diploma in photography part-time at a local
college. The instructors insist on pro lab processing so that any errors in
the slides belong to the student and not the lab. They are also good at
detecting digital images that have been photoshopped for submission.

I will probably still need to get a large format camera at some point in the
future as I am very interested in architectural photography.

Finally, I will now consider a used 4 x 5 when I make that choice. People
have assured me that they can be found cheaply and in good condition. The
costs, even of used gear, is still quite high in Canada. Costs don't simply
reflect the difference between the greenback and the loonie and what can be
reasonable in the US can be very high in Canada. That said, the cost of the
D200 is about the same between both countries.

Again, thank-you to everyone who answered.

Ehud
(As far as I can tell a real person.)

You should be able to easily buy a new 4x5 and a couple of used
lenses for
what the D200 sells for. Unless the D200 is a lot cheaper then I think it
is.
Or you could get the Shen Hao 5x7, the 4x5 reducing back and the 6x12 film
holder still for less money then the D200.
