Arrived home last evening to find Jon Edwards had shipped his newest design: a print humidifier. If anyone's interested I'll post some jpegs but for now, rest assured his usual design and engineering talents are obvious, even in this semi-rough prototype. The paper hangs vertically (three sheets of 16"x20" capacity in this version) and the moist air is circulated via two quiet fans. The actual humidity is provided by a regular ultrasonic humidifier.

Though I only unpacked this new gizmo this morning, I've been able to vary the chamber humidity from 50% to approaching 100%. This seems like a range that should work for most of us who need to humidify our papers before and/or after coating.

I have no idea how much this type of humidifier will cost if-when it goes into production. Jon doesn't give his stuff away so it might not appeal to the "why-pay-that-much-when-I-can-hang-prints-on-my-poodle-and-let-him-run-through-the-rain" crowd. There are often cheaper ways for many of the things we do in photography but the challenge is to decide if the labor and time savings of the more expensive methods make them worthwhile.

Tomorrow I have to print pigment over platinum so that will give me a chance to give the Edwards humidifier a good test drive. I've found that careful rehumidification helps with registration between the pigment and platinum components.

It might help Jon decide whether to build a production model if he had an idea how many printers are interested. Price aside, if you think a print humidifier could help you in your work, please drop me an email at info@danburkholder.com and I'll pass the results on to Jon. Thanks!

Hope this helps,

Dan
