Hi all,
I've been fairly quiet lately, letting the list run on
autopilot, while I settle into a new job and wait to get the pennies for
a modem (which I now have). In the meantime, four weeks of not reading
email has resulted in some 4000 messages (okay, I subscribe to more than
a couple of lists), and quite a few are error messages associated with
this list (and the other I run from the same software). Here are a few
pointers on using this mailing list and it's associated listproc
software.

1. This is probably the most important point, as it results in
your email simply disappearing into thin air. You MUST send email to the
list from that address which is subscribed. If your email address
changes, and you are not able to unsub, or simply change the old email
address, drop me a line and I'll fix it up for you.
The listproc has this nasty habit of rejecting any email from
people it doesn't think are subscribed. This includes those messages
from people simply emailing from an alternate email address. And as the
default situation is for you not to have your messages acknowledged
(this may be changed using the listproc SET command), most members of
this list won't know when this happens. There are a few people that this
happens to regularly (Luis, most of your messages of late have been
rejected because of an apparent address change). Drop me a line if this
is a permanent probalem and I'll fix your email address.

2. Frequently I get bounced mail messages from addresses that
don't work. I'm not the only one that gets them, and occassionally I'll
get irate email from a site administrator. To keep the peace, if I get
bounced email from an address for more than a day, and it looks like it
is going to be a problem (ie. not a mailbox full, or node down problem),
I'll nuke the address. I cannot send that user email to let them know
this (if I could, there wouldn't be a problem in the first place), so
you will not know if it happens to you except your email from this list
will dry up. If you suspect a problem, try subscribing again, or drop me
a note.

3. To prevent lots of test messages, and subscriptions and the
like going to the list instead of the listproc, the software rejects any
email messages it suspects have dubious content, or are from a dubious
address (eg. root or daemon). As such, it is a waste of your time
sending test messages to the list - ask a question instead. If you want
to know if you're subscribed, check the list of members on the listproc,
or, worse case, ask me.

Sorry for all these hassles, but the list software is some of
the best I've had before, and really does do a nice job. I should be
around to read email every two days or so, so don't worry about not
getting a response, it will come. It's nice to see the list thriving
(although I have a back up of one months worth of messages to read
still), and it does seem like the number of members is increasing nicely
(around 130 at the moment).

cheers
-steve

p.s. If anyone ever has a hassle with the list, wants help, etc,
feel free to drop me some email. I will respond eventually (sorry to
those folks that have been waiting a while, it's coming!).
