Liquid Light variations

I have a student doing an independent project on some preparing some
alternatives to Liquid Light. For instance he'd like to be able to produce
darker dark areas. I'm interested in being able to apply a more uniform
coating of the emulsion on 8x10 sheets of handmade paper.
The questions at the moment are for any information and references you
might have on the emulsion base, any experience you've had experimenting
with emulsions like Liquid Light, and, in general, any hints or
suggestions.
